Located in Fukushima-ku, in Japan, Gate Tower Building is a 16-storey office building famous for a highway that passes through three of its floors.
Why is Gate Tower Building famous?
Completed in 1992, the 71.9 m-tall building is Japan's first building to have a highway passing through it. The Hanshin Expressway passes directly through its 5th, 6th, and 7th floors and is deemed to be the tenant of those floors. This section of the expressway acts as a bridge, supported by structures adjacent to the building.
What’s the name of the highway through Gate Tower Building?
Located in downtown Osaka, the highway through the building is called Hanshin Expressway, a 239km (149-mile) expressway running around the cities of Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto. The Gate Tower Building was specifically designed to incorporate the Umeda Hanshin Expressway into its structure, creating a gap through which the highway runs.
