Highway 1 of Iraq was the world's scariest highway
Highway 1 was dubbed as the world's scariest highway. On the expressway between Jordan and Baghdad, drivers had to brave for a lot of years ISIS fighters and air strikes, to bring supplies to Iraq. It might be the most hairy truck route in the world. The number of trucks crossing into Iraq from Jordan has plummeted from 2000 to 30 on some days.
Where does Highway 1 start and end?
The road is mostly paved and runs between the Jordan border and the Iraq capital, through the heart of Islamic State territory. The truckers’ journey provides a window into a dangerous region that has become even more terrifying: the highway through hell.
Why was Highway 1 the scariest road in the world?
The highway passes through lots of kilometres controlled by the radical Islamist group. The road still remains an adrenaline-pumping journey and is definitely not for the faint of lungs, heart, or legs. On the run to Baghdad, drivers faced miles of empty, lawless road, prowled by brigands and militias, punctuated by rolling roadblocks operated by Islamic State militants in pickup trucks and purloined Hummers.
