A new paved road to Tso Lhamo Lake
Tso Lhamo Lake is a high mountain glacial lake at an elevation of 5,330m (17,490ft) above sea level, located in North Sikkim, India. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
Where is Tso Lhamo Lake?
The lake is located to the north of Dongkha La Pass, in the northeastern part of the country, near the Chinese border. Situated to the north of the Kangchengyao Range, the stunning and scenic beauty of the place is truly breathtaking.
Why is Tso Lhamo Lake Famous?
This beautiful glacial lake is also known as Chho Lhamo, Cholamu Lake, or Cholamoo Lake. The lake completely freezes in winter and is encircled by snow-covered mountains. It’s one of the highest lakes in the world and has about 40% less oxygen than at sea level, making breathing more difficult.
Is the Road to Tso Lhamo Lake Paved?
The road to the lake was recently paved. It runs north-south from Kerang to Yumesodong or Zero Point.
How Challenging is Driving to Tso Lhamo Lake?
The high altitude, combined with the risk of altitude sickness, challenging weather conditions, steep grades, and general inaccessibility, makes this road both difficult and hazardous. The route is quite remote, so it’s essential to come prepared. Food options are limited, so make sure to bring enough supplies. If your vehicle breaks down, you’ll find minimal passing traffic or nearby settlements, and some areas lack cell phone reception.
Can I Drive Through to Tso Lhamo Lake?
While Indian tourists are allowed to visit the lake, foreigners need to obtain a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi. It is not accessible to the civilian due to security reasons as the International border with China is just few kms away from the lake.
