A Very Bumpy, Grueling Road to Sangetsar Lake
Sangetsar Lake is a high mountain lake at an elevation of 3,708m (12,165ft) above sea level, located in the Tawang district in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh, in India. It’s one of the world’s famous hairpin roads.
Why is Sangetsar Lake Famous?
This lake, also known as Madhuri Lake, was formed during the 1973 earthquake. Situated in the western part of India, it is one of the remotest high-altitude lakes in the country.
Is the Road to Sangetsar Lake Unpaved?
The road to the lake is completely unpaved. It’s called Bum La Road, a challenging route suitable only for 4x4 vehicles. It features 52 sharp hairpin turns, with a narrow gravel path unprotected by guardrails. Starting from Lumpo, the road to the lake is 34.0 km (21.12 miles) long.
Can I Drive to Sangetsar Lake?
A special permit is required from the District Commissioner's (DC) office in Tawang to visit this lake, and only Indian nationals are allowed to access the area.
