The road from Jauljibi to Madkote is not for the sissies

Jauljibi-Madkote Road is a very scary cliff road located in the Indo-Nepal border. The road is in dreadful condition and requires strong nerves to negotiate it. If your GPS ever thinks it's a good idea to drive on this road, it may be time to get a new one.

Jauljibi-Madkote Road

The road runs along the Goriganga River. It's a narrow, windy road with no guard rail or secure edging for about 43 km. It includes several hairpin turns and crosses some waterfalls.
The road is located in the Pithoragarh District in the hill-state of Uttarakhand of India, and links Jauljibi and Madkote towns. The travel is picturesque as well as treacherous because of bad road conditions.

The road is winding, in some places only wide enough for one vehicle, and in many places bordered by a drop of hundreds of meters (many hundreds of feet) unprotected by guardrails. It descends down the hill into the valley of Gori river and then follows the southerly course of Gori river.
During the rainy season the road can be washed away. Road closures can be frequent, so check conditions before traveling to this area. Along the drive there are amazing views of the Panchchuli peaks, a group of five snow-capped Himalayan peaks lying at the end of the eastern Kumaon region.
