Where is Lamayuru Monastery?

The monastery, also known as Yuru Gompa, is located in the western part of the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh, high in the Himalayan Zanskar Range, to the east of the challenging Fotu La Top, a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,108m (13,478ft) above sea level.

Why is Lamayuru Monastery Famous?

Renowned as Tharpa Ling, which means the "Place of Freedom," Lamayuru Monastery is the oldest and one of the largest monasteries in the Ladakh region. The monastery is famous for its rich wall paintings, intricate thangkas, murals, scriptures, and statues of different forms of Buddha and other deities. Besides its monastery, Lamayuru also attracts tourists for its unique lunar-like landscape. Though remote, it is a favorite among photographers and trekkers.

How Long is the Road to Lamayuru Monastery?

The road to the monastery is a newly paved route with many serpentine curves offering breathtaking scenery. It’s part of NH 1 and stretches about 150km (93 miles), running west-east from Khangral to Leh.
