583 Country Road: only for experienced drivers
583 Country Road is a high mountain road located in the Chamdo Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It’s one of the highest roads of the country.
The road is 68.3 km (42.43 miles) long. It runs between the S303 road and a village known as Jinlingxiang. It’s unpaved and pretty steep with more than 50 hairpin turns. Do not take this drive if you have respiratory problems or any type of heart condition. Due to the high elevations and exposure, the road is subject to strong winds and rapid weather changes. Be prepared for the cold and wind. Even in summer you can confront with snowy days. The road tops out at 5.335m (17,503ft) above the sea level at Shargang La.
