Kulun Shanku
Kulun Shanku is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.785m (15,698ft) above the sea level, located in the Qinghai province of the People's Republic of China, in the northwest of the country.
The road to the summit, located within the Kunlun mountains, is asphalted. It’s called Qinghai-Tibet Highway (part of the China National Highway 109). The weather on this zone is harsh and highly unpredictable and it does not take much time for the bright sun shine to change over to moderate to heavy snow fall.
The pass links Golmud and Lhasa. The breathtaking scenery ranks as some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet. The pass, also known as Kunlun Pass, is terrible, with a notorius lack of oxygen that tests the organisms and a high degree of steepness. Most people feel altitude sickness at around 2,500-2,800 meters.
