Where is Gorun La?

The pass, also known as Guren La, is located on the boundary between Nagqu and the Shannan Prefecture, in the southwestern part of the country.

How long is the road to Gorun La?

The road through the pass is totally unpaved and very challenging, with large rocks, steep sections, and narrow passages. A 4x4 vehicle is required. It’s about 80km (50 miles) long, running south to north from Yangbajain to Dechen. Driving at this elevation can cause altitude sickness, leading to dizziness, nausea, and confusion, which impair driving. Severe cases may result in life-threatening pulmonary or cerebral edema. Low oxygen levels reduce reaction time, and extreme cold and strong winds add to the danger. Acclimatization and oxygen support are crucial for safety.

Can I drive to Gorun La?

Set high in the Nyainqêntanglha Mountains, it’s one of the highest roads in the country. The road through the summit is totally impassable in winter due to snow. The climb requires military authorization, which is very difficult to obtain (even for locals) because the area is extremely isolated and near the Indian border.
