Conquering the hairpinned Old Kunyi Road in Yunnan Province
Old Kunyi Road is one of the most challenging drives in China. Known as Yiliang 68 Dao Guai, the road is said to feature 68 hairpin turns, with a sharp turn every few meters. It’s one of the most winding roads in the country. From above, it resembles a massive dragon, twisting through the mountains. It’s also among the most hairpinned roads in the world.

The road is located in Xiaopojiao Village, about 53 kilometers (32.9 miles) from the city of Kunming, in Yiliang County, Yunnan Province.
How long is Old Kunyi Road?
The road is mostly unpaved. Built in 1995, it stretches 6.8 kilometers (4.2 miles) in length and 5 meters (16.4 feet) in width. The most challenging section is 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) long, featuring 42 tight turns. The longest straight section of the road is just 50 meters (164 feet).
Is Old Kunyi Road worth the drive?
Even many locals are unaware of this hidden gem. The "68 Turns" is a paradise for photographers, offering breathtaking views. For the best perspective, visitors can head to a viewpoint on top of Yanquansi Mountain, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the twisting road below.
