What You Need to Know About Driving Through Kongpo La
Kongpo La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.327m (17,477ft) above the sea level, located on the border of Nang County (Nyingtri Prefecture) and Lhünzê County (Shannan Prefecture) in the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China.
Set high on the southwestern part of the country, the pass is 59.9 km (37.22 miles) long, running south-north from Chosam to Dromda. The pass is totally unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle is necessary.
The drive is a real test of skill and nerve, featuring 28 hairpin turns and exceptionally steep sections, with some ramps reaching a maximum gradient of 14%.
