How to drive the seasonal Napa Lake Highway?
Napa Lake highway is a seasonal road located in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, in China. It’s one of the periodically flooded roads around the world.
Tucked away on the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, at an elevation of 3.270m (10,728ft) above the sea level, the Napa lake, or Napahai, is a temporary lake. Every June, when the southwest monsoon brings Shangri-La’s rainy season, the rain falls frequently and the lake surface increases, overflowing the road. So, this water road disappears. From the end of autumn to the next summer, without rains, the road appears again.
Set high in the Tianshan Mountains, the road across the lake is totally paved. It’s called Huanhu road. The drive is 12.5 km (7.76 miles) long. If you want to drive this road, you’ll need to pick the right time, because this is a "disappearing road".
