The road to Zǔsōng La will take your breath away
Zǔsōng La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 5.775m (18,946ft) above the sea level, located in Coqên County, in the Ngari Prefecture, in the west of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It’s one of the world’s highest roads.
Set high in the Gangdise Mountains on the Tibetan Plateau, the road to the summit, also known as Ouerji La, is totally unpaved. When the snow falls - which it does in the winter – things get tough and slippery. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey: adverse conditions are common. Facilities like electricity, medical aid, hot running water, western toilets etc. are rare to find. Very few tourists visit here since the route is tough and there are permit issues. 4wd vehicle required. There are high chances of getting affected by AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness). The road ends near Changlung and Aruo lakes.
Tucked away in the southeast of Ngari Prefecture, it’s one of the highest roads of the country. It’s very steep, hitting a 10% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Starting at Debuzhao Ema, the road is 87km (54.05 miles) long, with an elevation gain of 1.652m.
