Driving the wild Dongu La
Dongu La is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 4.944m (16,220ft) above the sea level, located in the Namling County of Shigatse in the Tibet Autonomous Region, in China.
Set high in the Western Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains, the road to the summit, also known as Donghu la, is totally unpaved but navigable by all passenger vehicles in dry weather conditions. It’s called 304 Provincial Road (S304). Access to the pass is typically open all year round, with the occasional closure in winters due to dangerous weather conditions.
Starting at Dazhuka, the road to the summit is 66km (41 miles) long. It features many steep sections. An earthquake in 2015 heavily damaged the road.
