The highway is located in the prefecture-level city of Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, in the northern part of the country.

When was the Tianlongshan Highway built?

The construction of the road started in March 2018 and was opened to traffic in May 2019.

How long is the Tianlongshan Highway?

The road is totally paved and very scenic. It’s 30km (18.64 miles) long and features four viaducts and a tunnel. Its elevation gain is 350 meters, from the beginning of the road until its end. It’s equivalent to a 116-floor building with a 3-meter story height. The road tops out at 1,364m (4,475ft) above sea level on Tianlong Mountain.

Why is the Tianlongshan Highway famous?

The most iconic section of the road is a circular loop bridge. It’s a three-storey circular highway bridge standing 350 meters tall, similar to the scenic Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop Bridge in Japan. The bridge is described as a giant dragon hovering over the mountain. It's one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.
