Where is Zhawa La?

The pass, also known as Tsawa La and Zhawa La, is located in western Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

Is Zhawa La unpaved?

The road through the pass is entirely unpaved and pretty demanding, with countless turns and dangerous narrow parts.

A New Road to Zhawa La

However, a few years ago, a paved road was built north of the real pass. The new road is 73km (45.36 miles) long, running west-east from Batang to Gemu. The drive is really challenging, and the road is very prone to falling rocks. It tops out at 4,922m (16,148ft) above sea level. The steep drive, with hundreds of hairpin turns, offers magnificent views of the Genyen range.
