The Ultimate Guide to Traveling the S307 Provincial Road
The challenging S307 Provincial Road is an absolute must for road lovers. Located in Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, if you love to drive, you will love it.
The unforgettable journey is 195 km (121 miles) long, running from Dagaxiang (Qüxü County, Lhasa, Tibet on the G318 Road), towards Gyantse (in Gyantse County, Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet, on the 204 Provincial Road-S204). Located in the Nyang Chu valley, it was once considered Tibet's third city.
The road is known as the Southern Friendship Highway. It’s not very steep, but just very long and continuous. The road was newly paved and it’s full of tourist buses. It offers stunning views of the Yamdrok Lake (or Blue Lake). As the largest fresh lake in the northern of the Himalaya Mountains, it spreads about 675 square meters from south to north.
It´s one of the most visited and scenic roads of the country, especially on the way to Everest Base Camp. Plan 4 hours to complete the drive without any stop. The road climbs up to Kamba La, at 4.852m (15,915ft) asl, Simi La, at 4.364m (14,317ft) asl and Karo La, at 5.010m (16,500ft) asl. Along the way you can see many Tibetan nomads and buddhist flags.
