Lake Ponchartrain
The Lake Ponchartrain Causeway is the longest continuous bridge over water and is a truly remarkable drive. But the rest of the lake is pretty spectacular too, and well worth exploring. Head down the west side of Lake Pontchartrain from Madisonville along the Great Lakeshore Drive to discover gorgeous views of the lake itself as well as quaint towns, atmospheric marshes, and fascinating wildlife. It is worth stopping off at Covington and Abita Springs, where you can pick up charming, unique souvenirs as well as getting a flavor of the local culture.
Bayou Teche Scenic Byway
The Bayou Teche Scenic Byway takes you through some of the most attractive landscapes and scenery of South Louisiana. The 80 miles of road that runs from Arnaudville to Franklin winds its way through wetlands, rivers, and bayous, with some of the most impressive swamp landscapes in the world. Watch the skies for eagles, hawks, and vultures wheeling on the thermals, and keep your eyes peeled for ‘gators in the mangroves on either side of the road!
Cajun Prairie
The rolling hills and open spaces of the Cajun Prairie make this scenic drive one of the most interesting and pleasant drives in the state. Drive past Acadian artifacts and discover the tiny Cajun communities that call the area home, before finishing up with stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico.
Great River Road
The next best thing to a boat trip on the Mississippi, the Great River Road takes you through the heart of rural Louisiana and offers up some of the best views of this majestic river that you are likely to find. The Great River Road runs for around 3,000 miles through 10 states, meaning there is ample opportunity to continue your adventure should the mood take you!
