Road trip guide: Conquering the Steenkampsberg Pass
Steenkampsberg Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.248m (7,375ft) above the sea level, located in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The road to the summit is a well-maintained tarred road. It’s called R577 and was opened in 1988. The steepest parts of the road are at 1:7. The pass is sometimes mistakenly referred to as De Berg Pass".
It is subject to winter snowfalls with such a high summit altitude. The pass road is 64.6 km (40.14 miles) long, running west-east from Roossenekal (a town in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in the Limpopo province) to Lydenburg (a town in Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, Mpumalanga).
