Located in the northern part of the country, high in the Al Madow mountain range, the road is completely unpaved. A 4x4 vehicle is required for the journey. The road reaches an elevation of 2,067m (6,781ft) above sea level. It features numerous tunnels and hairpin turns that add to the challenge.

How long is the road from Maydh to Erigavo?

The road is 77.5 km (48.15 miles) long, running north-south from Maydh (an ancient port city in the eastern Sanaag region) to Erigavo (also known as Ceerigaabo in the central Sanaag region).

Should I travel the road from Maydh to Erigavo?

Travel to Somalia is strongly discouraged due to extreme security risks. The situation is volatile, with high threats of domestic terrorism, particularly in Mogadishu and south-central regions. The rule of law is minimal, and violent events like bombings and military activity are common. Foreigners, especially journalists, human rights workers, and aid staff, face severe risks of kidnapping, murder, and arbitrary arrest. Anti-Western sentiment is high, and kidnappings of Westerners, including in Somaliland, have occurred. Those currently in Somalia should leave immediately.
