Driving to the Summit of Mount Tullu Dimtu: One of Africa’s Highest Roads

Tulluu Diimtuu is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 4,389 m (14,400 ft) above sea level, situated in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia. It’s one of the highest roads in Africa.

Where is Mount Tullu Dimtu?

The peak is located some 450 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, in the southeastern part of the country within Bale National Park. It’s said to be the fourth highest peak in the country after Ras Dashen (4,550 m), Ancua (4,462 m), and Kidus Yared (4,453 m).

Is the road to Mount Tullu Dimtu unpaved?

The dirt road to the summit is totally unpaved. The National Park is traversed by a rough road through the Sanette Plateau at an elevation of 4,000 meters above sea level. A small path diverts from this road up to Mt. Tulluu Dimtuu.

How challenging is the road to Mount Tullu Dimtu?

The final stretch to the summit is both steep and narrow. The journey begins in the small town of Goba, situated at around 2,600 meters above sea level. From there, the path ascends to the entrance gate of the National Park at 3,500 meters, and after covering 20 kilometers, you reach the windswept Sanette Plateau. The route then continues for another 17 kilometers with little change in elevation, leading toward Mt Tulluu Dimtuu. The last four kilometers are the final challenge, taking you all the way to the mountain’s summit.
