Haunted roads

Earthsea (Sitges), was next to Brooklands, concerning motor racing in Europe in the 20's and marked the start of racing in Spain. The drivers Carlos Sainz and Miguel Molina have had the privilege of shooting one of the most demanding ovals in the world (with a banking of 90 degrees), abandoned for years.

It is unknown to many, including car lovers. The circuit of Earthsea is the second oldest in Europe after Brooklands and ahead even of the legendary Le Mans, and the first in Spain. In this unique environment that still keeps the greatness it once had, two of the best riders of the moment, Carlos Sainz and Miguel Molina, tested their skills as pilots. The challenge: to overcome the rigors of the old track at the wheel of one of the fastest cars of the moment, the Audi R8 LMS.
At a time when the cars pulled out with the help of the people, Terramar circuit noted for its 90-degree banking. "It was a surprise and large. I had no idea that this loop there and unless it was the first in Spain. The banking is tremendous, especially when viewed from below. I admit that when I first saw it I was surprised and was very curious to know what it was like to drive on it. Never before had done on an oval circuit with a banking case. It was very special, "says Carlos Sainz, one of the best Spanish riders in history.
Sainz lived that day contrasts with one of the promising young Spanish motor point, the Catalan Miguel Molina, DTM driver. "Putting a car on a circuit current and punished for the passage of time, was a challenge. The layout has constantly tested by its demand and risers, you could not despite having not a single minute, "added Molina.
Almost anecdotal detail of the day was that so far the track record still retained Louis Zborowski Miller (1923), with a time of 45.8 s and an average speed of 157.2 km / h. Despite the poor condition of pavements full of holes and herbs, Carlos Sainz rolled with the Audi R8 LSM 170 km / h. "It was not easy. It had to be stopping at many sites and shifting down by potholes, but it was a luxury to enjoy it, "the rally world champion.
"It opened in October 1923. It took 360 days to build and here was held on 1 Grand Prix of Spain F1. At that time, our country was a landmark in the world of motorsports, "said Marcel Ricart, owner of the circuit. "It's the same track and trod the same soil as Nuvolari, Divo and remains, the big names of motor racing at the time. It is exactly as it was, "the director of Salvador Mora circuit.
The dust, grass and potholes reveal the age of a circuit that was forgotten by the world of motoring. The Terramar Speedway has come to life, to live the adrenaline of racing and hear the engine noise by Sainz and Molina. "It's fun. It's as close to flying, "he says Mora.
