Driving to Pločno in the Čvrsnica mountain, the roof of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Pločno is a high mountain peak at an elevation of 2.204m (7,230ft) above sea level, located in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Where is Pločno?
The peak is located on the boundary between Herzegovina-Neretva and West Herzegovina cantons, in the northern part of the country. The summit is the highest mountain in the Central Dinarides. It hosts a communication tower and the views are amazing.
Can you drive to Čvrsnica in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Part of the Čvrsnica mountain, the road to the summit is totally unpaved with loose rocks but nothing too difficult. Some people strongly advise against any offroad riding because of the land mine situation. There are several stories from the Balkans war where mountain climbers were intercepted by military just for taking pictures on nearby mountain tops... Now it's used for civil purposes and nobody cares if you're there.
How long is the road to Čvrsnica in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
The road to the summit is 11.7km (7.27 miles) long starting at Bare. The road is brutally steep, hitting a 34% of maximum gradient through some of the ramps. Located on the left side of Neretva river, to drive the road without stopping will take most people between 45 and 60 minutes. Due to its height, it’s often called the ‘roof’ of Herzegovina.

However, prior to setting off on your journey, it is essential to assess the prevailing snow conditions. In this region, powerful gusts of wind have the potential to accumulate massive snow-drifts, reaching an astonishing thickness of up to 15 meters. The upper plateau is typically blanketed in snow from November through April, while certain concealed areas retain their snowy covering throughout the entire year.
