Jelep La is an international high mountain pass at an elevation of 4,434m (14,547ft) above sea level, located on the border of India and China.
The pass is situated in the Dongkya Range of the eastern Himalayas, east of Nathu La. It connects the East Sikkim District in Sikkim, India, with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
While traders have used it for centuries, the first road through the pass was constructed by the British in 1884.
The road to the summit is fully paved but it’s pretty challenging, with numerous hairpin turns, narrow stretches, and steep inclines. The drive offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
The drive through the pass is very scenic, and features landscapes of rhododendron forests on the Indian side and the Chumbi Valley on the Tibetan Plateau.
The pass is usually impassable during the winter. Due to its location and acting as a border pass, the road is off-limits to tourists and even civilians.
