What’s on the Summit of Wolvi Mountain?
Located in the Noosa hinterland, in the northeastern part of the country, the summit hosts a lookout called Salmon Lookout. The tower was built for the forestry department as a fire tower. Today, fire towers are not manned anymore, as cameras can be monitored remotely. Some of the towers are now used for the mobile telephone network and other communication systems. The summit offers awe-inspiring views of the beach, hills, and farmland in the area. There's also a well-kept picnic area at the lookout.
Is the Road to Wolvi Mountain and Salmon Lookout Unpaved?
The road to the summit is totally unpaved. It’s called Wolvi Mountain Road. The dirt road to the top is rough and more suitable for 4WD vehicles; however, regular cars can travel it when the track is dry. 1km before the lookout, there is a farm gate you need to open and close. It's locked in the evening.
How Long is the Road to Wolvi Mountain?
The drive is pretty steep. Starting from Gympie Kin Kin Pomona Road, the ascent is 5.6 km (3.47 miles) long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 219 meters. The average gradient is 3.91%.
