The Pech river is located in Afghanistan. The Pech River system is fed from glaciers and snow from the Hindu Kushto its north. The river rises in central Nuristan Province and proceeds south and southeasternly through the center ofKunar Province, joining the Kunar River at the provincial capital of Asadabad.
In the Pech Valley, Pashto as well as Askunu language is spoken. The Safi tribe of Pashtuns are the majority population in the Pech Valley. The largest settlement is Nangalam, located at the junction of the Pech River andWaygal River.
There are a series of US bases along the river valley in Kunar Province, the largest of these being Camp Blessing, located near Nangalam. In 2008 a paved road from Asadabad to Nangalam was completed along the north bank of the Pech.
The Pech River Road is one of the most dangerous roads in eastern Afghanistan. Poor weather, widely dispersed unit locations, and heavy demand for aerial resupply assets make road convoys essential despite the risks of attack, rock slides, and other threats.
