Crossing the iconic Oland Bridge over the Kalmar Strait

Located in the southern part of Sweden, the iconic Ölandsbron, also known as the Öland Bridge, is an engineering marvel. It connects the Swedish mainland with Öland, the second largest island of the country. It’s one of the most spectacular bridges in the world.

How long is the Öland Bridge?

The road bridge is 6,072 meters long. The maximum height is 41.69 meters and the minimum is 6.65 meters. At this length it’s said to be Sweden's longest bridge. The bridge is built upon 155 pillars of reinforced concrete, with the highest section consisting of 6 pillars which span 130 meters each. While the Öresund Bridge linking Sweden with Denmark is longer overall, the Öland Bridge is the longest entirely in Swedish territory.

Where does the Öland Bridge start and end?

Spanning the Kalmar Strait in the Baltic Sea, the bridge runs from Jutnabben (on the mainland) to Möllstorp (on Öland). The Ölandsbron not only facilitates easy travel between the island and the mainland, but it also provides a unique perspective on the beauty of the region. Stretching over 6 kilometers, this impressive bridge offers both practicality and stunning views. It’s toll-free.

When was the Öland Bridge opened?

Built of reinforced concrete, the bridge opened on 30 September 1972 and replaced the old ferryboats. It carries the paved secondary road 137, which connects to the E22 on the mainland and to the secondary road 136 on Öland.
